Privacy Policy

1. Who We Are
Screenburn is operated by Metrotone Media Group (“we”, “us”, “our”). We are the data controller responsible for your personal data. For data protection enquiries, contact us at [email protected].
2. What Data We Collect
We collect the minimum data necessary to provide our service:
Account data: Email address, display name, and hashed authentication tokens. We do not collect passwords when you use magic-link sign-in.
Story data: Screenplay content, character profiles, story questions and answers, scene content, and version history that you create within the platform.
Usage data: Page views, feature usage analytics (via self-hosted Plausible Analytics — no cookies, no personal data transferred to third parties), and session duration.
Payment data: Billing is handled by our payment processor (LemonSqueezy). We do not store credit card numbers or full payment details on our servers. We retain only transaction IDs and subscription status.
Technical data: IP address (for security and rate limiting only, not stored long-term), browser type, and device information.
3. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR Article 6)
We process your personal data on the following legal bases:
Contract performance (Art. 6(1)(b)): Processing necessary to provide the Screenburn service you signed up for, including account management, story storage, and collaboration features.
Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)): Security monitoring, fraud prevention, service improvement through anonymised analytics, and essential communications about your account.
Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): Marketing communications (you can withdraw consent at any time), and optional AI voice analysis features which require explicit opt-in.
4. How We Use Your Data
Your data is used to provide and improve the Screenburn platform: authenticating your account, storing and syncing your screenplay content, enabling real-time collaboration, processing payments, providing customer support, and sending essential service notifications.
We do not use your creative content for AI training. Your screenplays, characters, and story data are never used to train machine learning models. Our AI features (Screenburn Suggests, Script Mirror) operate under strict privacy controls — see Section 8 below.
5. Data Sharing
We share personal data only with the following categories of recipients, and only to the extent necessary:
Payment processor: LemonSqueezy (for subscription billing)
Email service: Self-hosted Listmonk (for transactional emails such as magic links and account notifications)
AI provider: Third-party large language model APIs power our AI features. On the Free tier we never send your screenplay text, your story answers, or your characters to these APIs. On the Studio tier, features you invoke (Script Mirror, the Studio Writers Room, and voice analysis) send the specific material described in Section 8 so they can do their work. We never send your creative content to any AI provider for training.
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with advertisers. We do not transfer data to data brokers.
6. International Data Transfers
Our servers are hosted in Helsinki, Finland (within the EU/EEA). Story data, account data, and analytics data are stored within the EU. Where data is transferred outside the EEA (e.g., to our payment processor), we ensure adequate safeguards are in place, including Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) as approved by the European Commission.
7. Data Retention
Active accounts: Your data is retained for as long as your account is active.
Deleted accounts: When you delete your account, all personal data and creative content is permanently deleted within 30 days. Anonymised analytics data may be retained.
Payment records: Transaction records are retained for 7 years as required by financial regulations.
Security logs: IP addresses in security logs are automatically purged after 90 days.
8. AI Features & Your Creative Content
Screenburn runs on a two-product principle. The Free tier is a protected workspace: our AI never reads your creative work. The Studio tier adds AI features that work with your material, and each one runs only when you invoke it.
Screenburn Suggests (all tiers): Generates real examples from a platform-authored question. It never receives your answers, your characters, or your screenplay. This holds on every tier.
Local analysis (all tiers): Retention and structure analysis score your own material with no AI model. Your text stays inside Screenburn and is never sent to a model provider.
Script Mirror (Studio): Reads your development answers, your characters, and your scene outlines to reflect your story structure back to you. It does not read your scene prose.
Studio Writers Room (Studio): Drafts scenes from your development answers and reads your recent scenes for continuity. It runs only when you ask it to.
Voice analysis (Studio, explicit consent): Reads your characters’ dialogue to analyse their voices. It runs only after you consent through an in-app dialog, and you can withdraw consent at any time.
Your AI trust setting: You can set an account-wide AI trust level in Settings. The Local-only and No-AI settings turn off every model-backed feature across your account, enforced on our servers before any model call.
No AI training on your data: We never use your screenplays, characters, story answers, or any other creative content to train, fine-tune, or improve AI models.
9. Your Rights (GDPR Chapter III)
Under the General Data Protection Regulation, you have the following rights:
Right of access (Art. 15): Request a copy of all personal data we hold about you.
Right to rectification (Art. 16): Request correction of inaccurate personal data.
Right to erasure (Art. 17): Request deletion of your personal data. You can delete your account from your settings page, or email us.
Right to restrict processing (Art. 18): Request that we limit how we use your data.
Right to data portability (Art. 20): Export your screenplays in industry-standard formats (PDF, Final Draft .fdx, Fountain). Request a machine-readable export of your account data.
Right to object (Art. 21): Object to processing based on legitimate interest, including profiling.
Right to withdraw consent (Art. 7(3)): Withdraw consent for marketing communications or AI voice analysis at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days as required by law.
10. Cookies & Tracking
Screenburn uses minimal cookies:
Essential cookies: Session authentication tokens required for the platform to function. These cannot be disabled.
Analytics: We use self-hosted Plausible Analytics, which does not use cookies and does not collect personal data. No consent banner is required for Plausible under GDPR.
We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics that profile users across websites.
11. Security
We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including: encrypted data in transit (TLS 1.3), encrypted data at rest, access controls and authentication, regular security testing, and prepared database statements to prevent injection attacks. In the event of a data breach affecting your personal data, we will notify you and the relevant supervisory authority within 72 hours as required by GDPR Article 33.
12. Children
Screenburn is not directed at children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If we become aware that we have collected data from a child under 16, we will delete that data promptly.
13. Supervisory Authority
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. As our servers are hosted in Finland, the relevant authority is the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman (Tietosuojavaltuutetun toimisto). You may also contact the supervisory authority in your country of residence.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes by email. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page indicates when this policy was last revised.
