INT. SOL'S DINER - COUNTER - DAY

Breakfast rush on Water Street. Steam off the grill, suits three deep at the counter, a wall television running business news with the sound down. By the kitchen window a meat supplier's calendar shows SEPTEMBER 2026, the days crossed off in black marker up to the fifteenth. SOFIA REYES, 30, short dark hair, no makeup, a white apron over black, works the counter with a coffee pot.

SOL BERMAN, 63, heavy and slow, an apron older than his grill, slides plates through the pass.

A BANKER, 40s, cufflinks, has his phone propped against the sugar. On the screen, a young woman in a graduation gown, long hair, glasses. Under her the chyron: REYES HEIRESS UNSEEN 100 DAYS AFTER FOUNDER'S DEATH. MEETING 10 DECEMBER.

Sofia fills his cup. Short hair, no glasses, the same face above the pot.

BANKER

(not looking up)

A hundred days. Owns the bank and she can't get on a plane.

SOFIA

Maybe she's working.

BANKER

At what?

SOFIA

Something.

He holds the cup out. She fills it.

BANKER

Old man dropped dead at his desk. Saved the board the trouble.

Sofia pours until the coffee stands at the rim. She stops.

SOFIA

More?

BANKER

Lisbon. That's the word on her. Lucky girl.

At the last stool AUGUSTA PETTIGREW, 78, small, upright, pearls and a wool coat in September, eats poached eggs alone. Sol sets her check by the plate.

SOL

Same next Tuesday, Mrs Pettigrew?

AUGUSTA

If I'm alive, Sol.

She takes folded bills from her coat pocket, counts them onto the saucer and tucks them under it. She nods to Sofia and goes out.

At the far end a MAN in a cheap grey suit, thirties, thin, eats crackers with his coffee. He catches Sofia looking and looks away.

Sofia turns to the pass. The bell over the door rings.

His stool is empty. A folded bill under his cup. The check reads $4.00.

Sofia lifts the cup. A twenty.

SOL

Third time in a week.

SOFIA

Who is he?

SOL

A suit. They all look like that.

Sofia pushes through the door, the twenty in her hand. A hundred grey suits walk toward Broad Street. Not one turns round.

End of episode one.
