The Savannah Vampire's Gullah Nanny

A Gullah Geechee nanny from a marsh island takes a live-in post at a walled river estate outside Savannah, for the daughter of the city's oldest family fortune, a child who is never seen in daylight, and learns the family's condition is older than the house. Her grandmother's house and land on the island are the reason she took the post.

The Screenburn structure standard

INT. LATTIMORE HOUSE - ENTRANCE HALL - NIGHT

A tall hall in an old river house, shutters closed on a hot night. One lamp. A staircase climbs into dark. A long case clock stands by the door. The walls carry empty picture hooks and pale squares where frames once hung. HOLLIS RUCKER, 70, estate manager, grey suit, holds the door for SIMONE PETTAWAY, 28, one bag, sweat on her neck, phone in hand. The phone reads Mon 31 Aug, 9:04 PM.

RUCKER

Simone Pettaway.

SIMONE

Yes sir.

RUCKER

From Oyster Sound.

SIMONE

You read my file.

RUCKER

I read your name. Mr Lattimore read the file.

Simone taps the phone. A listing fills the screen: Resident nanny. Nights only. No questions. $4,000 a week.

SIMONE

It says nights.

RUCKER

It means nights. You sleep in the house by day. The shutters stay shut. The ice house across the yard is not yours. The child's door stays shut until he says.

SIMONE

What is the child's name?

RUCKER

Odessa. She is nine.

SIMONE

The listing said no questions.

RUCKER

You have asked three.

She digs in the bag for her licence. A folded letter falls out. Rucker picks it up. The heading reads FINAL NOTICE. A line reads Sale date 15 October. He hands it back.

RUCKER

He pays Fridays. Cash.

She looks at the bare walls.

SIMONE

Where are the portraits?

RUCKER

There are none. The family never sat for them.

In the one place a portrait should hang, above the clock, a small frame holds a sheet of paper. Brown ink, an old hand, a seal pressed into the corner. Simone steps close. Legible words: two thousand dollars. 14 March 1917. Consideration paid. Two signatures. A third line runs under the mat.

SIMONE

Two thousand dollars. 1917.

RUCKER

A company paper. The first receipt the firm ever wrote. He keeps it where his great grandfather would have hung.

The clock strikes the quarter.

JULIAN

Miss Pettaway.

JULIAN LATTIMORE, 36, dark suit, no tie, stands at the top of the stairs. He comes down without a sound.

JULIAN

Did you read it?

SIMONE

Some of it.

JULIAN

What is it?

SIMONE

A receipt.

He holds out his hand. She takes it. The hand is cold as the clock case.

JULIAN

Good. Then you already know what everyone in this house is.

End of episode one.
