The line rises to the last act. The paywall points carry the strongest turns.

INT. COLE RANCH KITCHEN - MORNING

Late May light through the window over the sink. A long pine table with two chairs pulled out, a fridge covered in crayon drawings, a calendar pinned beside them. On one side of the table sits RUBY COLE, 6, in a red shirt with a horse on it, braids uneven, a postcard flat under both hands. Across from her sits ELENA MARSH, 32, dark hair tied back, a canvas bag on her knee, a pen held over a form. Through the open door to the hall, WYATT COLE, 38, in a work shirt with the sleeves rolled, kneels at a door with a screwdriver and a hinge pin. He does not look in. He does not turn the screw.

RUBY

Would you like to be my mom?

Elena caps the pen.

ELENA

No.

Ruby nods. She turns the postcard over and slides it across the table. A picture of Denver, mountains behind the towers.

RUBY

That's from my mom. She's in Denver. She sends one from everywhere.

Elena reads the back. Two lines in block capitals. A round postmark over the stamp reads Harlow, Mont. She hands it back.

ELENA

That's a good one.

RUBY

So you could be my mom until she's back. Then I'd have two.

ELENA

I'm here about the nanny job, Ruby. That's a different job.

RUBY

Dad says you're the third one this year.

ELENA

Then I'll tell you what I told the form. I have one rule.

RUBY

Rules have ends. Dad says.

ELENA

Not this one. I don't date the people I work for. I don't marry them either.

In the hall the screwdriver stops.

RUBY

Who said marry?

ELENA

You did. With your face.

Ruby puts the postcard in her pocket and looks toward the hall.

RUBY

Dad.

Wyatt stands, sets the screwdriver on the hall table and comes to the doorway. He looks at the bag on Elena's knee, then at the form.

WYATT

Nobody asked.

ELENA

Good.

WYATT

Start Monday.

He goes back to the hinge. Elena signs the form. Ruby crosses to the screen door and looks up at the sky over the yard. She wets a finger and holds it up.

RUBY

Clear tonight. Clear all week.

ELENA

You do the weather?

RUBY

Every morning. I'm right most days.

She turns from the door.

RUBY

Wedding by harvest.

Elena picks up her bag. In the hall the hinge pin drops on the boards and rolls.

End of episode one.
