INT. WHITFIELD HOUSE - STUDY - DAY
A tall room of dark shelves, a long desk and one window onto the hill. JESS WHITFIELD, 18, small and neat in a grey cardigan, holds the door. MAYA BRANDT, 19, in a pressed white shirt and shoes a size too big, steps past her with a letter in her hand. The letter reads: WHITFIELD TOWN SCHOLARSHIP. INTERVIEW: THURSDAY 27 AUGUST 2026, 2 P.M., THE WHITFIELD HOUSE, HILL ROAD.
JESS
He's on his way down. Sit anywhere.
MAYA
Thank you.
JESS
You don't remember me.
MAYA
I remember you.
Jess goes. The door stays open.
Maya checks her phone. The screen reads THU 27 AUG, 1:58, over a photograph of Maya beside an old woman in a green scarf, both squinting into sun. She puts the phone away.
She does not sit. On the desk a heavy book lies open, its pages yellow. HALLORAN COLLEGE 1968 runs in gold along the spine. The open page holds one black and white photograph: two teenagers on stone steps, a boy in a blazer, a girl with a silver cup in both hands. The caption reads: FOUNDERS' DAY, 11 APRIL 1968. W. WHITFIELD AND R. BRANDT, BURSARY PRIZE.
Maya's finger stops above the girl's face.
MAYA
Gran.
WALT WHITFIELD, 80, tall and stooped, thick glasses, a cane, stands in the doorway. Maya's hand comes back to her side.
WALT
You've found my desk.
MAYA
I'm sorry. It was open.
WALT
It's always open. Sit down, Miss Brandt.
She sits. He lowers himself into the chair behind the desk and leaves the book as it is.
WALT
Why this scholarship?
MAYA
It's the only one that pays for everything.
WALT
That's the honest answer. Give me the other one.
MAYA
This is my town.
WALT
The family interviews. That's the rule since 1988. My grandson sits in.
MAYA
No.
WALT
No?
MAYA
I'll do this with you. Not with him.
WALT
Then you won't do it.
Maya stands and folds the letter into her shirt pocket.
MAYA
Fine.
She turns for the door.
COLE WHITFIELD, 21, fills the doorway, tall, damp hair, a college sweatshirt with the sleeves pushed up. She stops a yard from him.
COLE
You.
