INT. IRENA'S BAKERY - MORNING
Ten past seven, Monday, the last day of November. Dark outside the front window, frost on the glass, the street lamps on Main Street still lit. Inside, warm light on a glass case of cinnamon rolls, steam off the trays, a chalkboard, three customers in parkas in a line. SADIE KOWALSKI, 30, flour to the elbows, dark hair tied back with a pencil through it, boxes rolls without looking at the box. Behind the till hangs a corkboard: a rota, postcards, a child's drawing of a cake.
The door bell rings. NATE CORWIN, 34, a dark city coat, no hat, no gloves, a leather folder under one arm, stamps snow off polished shoes and waits behind the parkas.
The line clears. Nate opens the folder and slides a cheque across the counter. Pale blue paper, NATHAN J. CORWIN printed in the corner, the amount written in full: two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The payee line reads Irena's Bakery.
NATE
For the lease. All of it, today.
Sadie reads it. She takes a cinnamon roll from the tray with the tongs, sets it on a square of paper and slides it across until it stops against the cheque.
SADIE
The bakery is not for sale.
KIP HAUGEN, 17, an apron over a hoodie, braces, holds his phone up in the kitchen doorway and films. Behind him at the bench, IRENA NOWAK, 84, small, white hair under a scarf, a cardigan under her apron, shapes rolls and does not look up.
SADIE
Kip. Trays.
KIP
This is the trays.
Nate pushes the roll back an inch. Sadie pushes the cheque back an inch.
NATE
I'm in town until you sign.
SADIE
Then you'll want breakfast.
She picks up the cheque, walks to the corkboard and pins it with a red drawing pin between the rota and the child's drawing.
SADIE (CONT'D)
It can hang there.
NATE
That is a lot of money to pin to a wall.
SADIE
It's a lot of wall.
He takes the roll, bites it, chews.
NATE
Two o'clock. I'll come back at two.
SADIE
We close at two.
NATE
I know when you close.
He goes out. The bell rings.
KIP
Sadie. It's already got four hundred views.
Sadie wipes the counter and does not look at the board.
End of episode one.
