The Screenburn structure standard
Every script here is built to the Screenburn structure standard: eight rules for how a vertical series opens, turns and ends, applied to every episode and to the season as a whole. We publish the results, not the rules. The score and the strip show them.

INT. MARGE'S DINER - NIGHT
Snow drives sideways past the window of a twelve-stool diner in a Michigan factory town, 23:40 on the clock above the pie case, chairs already upturned on half the tables. JENNA COLE, 28, a waitress with a quick step and a pencil through her hair, wipes the last booth while a shape crosses the lot outside without a hat.
The door opens on the wind. A MAN, 36, in a ruined cashmere coat and no gloves, snow to the knee, stands in it.
MAN
Is there a table.
JENNA
There are eleven. Sit before you fall.
MARGE DUNBAR, 62, broad in a cardigan, owner of the place, sets a mug on the counter without being asked and fills it.
MARGE
Motel's full. Truckers. Every room since six.
TYLER COLE, 15, all phone and elbows, reads from the stool by the register.
TYLER
County alert. Every road out is shut. Every one.
The bell again. RAY COLE, 60, snow on the shoulders of a county jacket, plough keys in his fist, stamps his boots and looks at the coat before he looks at the man.
RAY
Where's your car?
MAN
The bend past the grain tower. It just stopped.
RAY
(nodding)
I know that stretch.
Jenna is already untying her apron.
JENNA
He can have the couch.
RAY
Jen.
JENNA
Dad. It's ten below. He can have the couch.
MARGE
(to the man)
What do we call you?
MAN
Alex.
Marge waits. Nothing more comes. She puts a slice of pie in a box.
INT. COLE HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
A small room, a tree with too many lights, a couch with a folded blanket, the furnace ticking. Alex sits on the edge of the couch in the dark with the pie box on his knee. His phone lights his face. The lock screen reads 23:55, 17 December. Fourteen missed calls, the same name on every one: "Miles Whitcomb". Under them one message from the same name, stamped 16 December, 16:12: "The discretionary pool is approved. Needs your signature."
He turns the phone face down on the cushion and does not answer.
End of episode one.
