EXT. LONGBOURN, THE COPSE - DAY (HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND. OCTOBER 1812)
Autumn wind stirs yellow leaves along the narrow gravel walk between the trees. Elizabeth and Lady Catherine walk from the carriage on the drive into the quiet copse.
ELIZABETH BENNET, 20, with dark eyes, in a pale spencer and muslin gown, turns to her.
LADY CATHERINE DE BOURGH, 55, imposing, in a black satin pelisse, glares at her.
ELIZABETH
If you believed it impossible to be true, I wonder you took the trouble of coming so far.
LADY CATHERINE
This match, to which you have the presumption to aspire, can never take place. Mr. Darcy is engaged to my daughter!
INT. LONGBOURN, THE SITTING ROOM - DAY (MONTHS EARLIER. HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND. SEPTEMBER 1811)
Morning sunlight pours through tall sash windows onto the chintz sofas and tables piled with books in the sitting room. Mr. Bennet sits by the hearth while Mrs. Bennet paces the carpet.
MR. BENNET, 50, dry, in a brown coat and spectacles, reads his book.
MRS. BENNET, 45, fretful, in a lace cap and morning gown, approaches his chair.
MRS. BENNET
My dear Mr. Bennet, have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?
Mr. Bennet remains silent and shakes his head.
MRS. BENNET (CONT'D)
Do not you want to know who has taken it?
MR. BENNET
You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.
What is his name?
MRS. BENNET
Bingley.
MR. BENNET
Is he married or single?
MRS. BENNET
Oh, single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!
MR. BENNET
How so? How can it affect them?
MRS. BENNET
My dear Mr. Bennet, how can you be so tiresome? You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them.
MR. BENNET
Is that his design in settling here?
MRS. BENNET
Design? But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes.
MR. BENNET
I see no occasion for that.
MRS. BENNET
But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood.
MR. BENNET
It is more than I engage for, I assure you.
MRS. BENNET
But consider your daughters. Only think what an establishment it would be for one of them. Indeed you must go, for it will be impossible for us to visit him, if you do not.
