EXT. HAWKS STADIUM - FIELD - NIGHT
Floodlights over a college football field after the final whistle. Players in red and white shake hands at midfield. The stands are full and loud, a band plays, and the big screen above the end zone reads HOMECOMING, SATURDAY 24 OCTOBER, HAWKS 24, VISITORS 23. THORVALD WIIK, 23, tall and fair, a kicker in a grass stained number 19, walks away from his team to the fifty yard line and goes down on one knee.
In the stands, MICHELLE RICHARDS, 22, braids tied back, a Hawks hoodie, a stack of printed pages on her lap headed SENIOR THESIS, DRAFT DUE 15 JANUARY, runs a highlighter down a page. Beside her TASHA BELL, 22, loud, phone up, films the field.
TASHA
Michelle. Look up.
Michelle looks up. The big screen shows Thorvald on one knee. Under him the words: MICHELLE, WILL YOU MARRY ME?
A camera finds Michelle. Her face fills the screen, highlighter in hand.
MICHELLE
He didn't.
TASHA
He did. He's doing it. Say something.
Michelle stands. The pages slide off her lap. She goes down the steps, over the rail, and walks to the fifty yard line. Thorvald stays on his knee. He holds up a ring, thin gold, one old stone.
THORVALD
I asked them to turn the microphone off. They did not.
MICHELLE
You're on the screen.
THORVALD
Yes. Michelle Richards. Will you marry me?
MICHELLE
Yes.
He puts the ring on her finger. He stands and lifts her off the grass. On the screen, the two of them kissing. Tasha screams at her phone.
MICHELLE
What's your last name?
THORVALD
Wiik. Like week.
At the mouth of the tunnel his kit bag sits on the bench. He takes out his phone. The screen lights with a message from Far: a thumbs up, and the words Stay as long as you like.
MICHELLE
Who's Far?
THORVALD
My father. He knew I would ask tonight.
He pockets the phone and takes her hand.
MICHELLE
Where do we live? I'm here until May.
THORVALD
Here. I am here until June. First the wedding.
MICHELLE
Next summer?
THORVALD
Christmas. In Norway. In the snow. My grandmother has a church.
MICHELLE
This Christmas?
