My Dancing Heart

When Serena loses a major ballroom competition and embarrasses herself on live TV, she goes back to her small town to live with her strict religious parents. To make ends meet she tries to teach dance to kids, but a local annoying Bachata tutor, András, is in the way. Slowly, sparks fly when Serena learns to compromise and let her old love of dance come back into her heart, as well as love. And when a big competition comes to town, András will train Serena for her one last shot at proving just how much she is willing to follow her dream.

INT. ARENA - FLOOR - NIGHT

A giant screen carries a broadcast graphic in its corner: NATIONAL LATIN FINAL. SAT 7 MARCH. LIVE. Under white light, six couples in sequins fly through the last bars of a jive. Six thousand people stand. At the rail, JENNY SOSA, 27, blonde, in white from shoe to strap, presses a hand over her mouth. On the floor, SERENA ANDRADE, 27, small, dark hair scraped back, red dress, red shoes, spins in the hold of BRUNO SALCEDO, 30, gelled hair, open shirt. At the commentary desk, OSVALDO PINTO, 55, dyed hair, bright jacket, leans into his microphone.

OSVALDO

And the last turn. Andrade.

Serena turns. Her left heel folds sideways under the shoe. Her ankle rolls. Bruno's hand opens and lets hers go. She hits the floor on her hip and her cheek. A camera on a crane swings down to her face. The giant screen fills with it. Six thousand people go quiet. The music plays on.

INT. BUS - DAY

Sun through a dusty window. A ticket in Serena's hand: LOS SAUCES. SUN 8 MAR. 11:40. Brown fields, then a sign on a post: LOS SAUCES. Serena wears last night's dress under a grey cardigan. A red shoe bag sits on her lap. She unzips it. A right shoe, red satin, whole. A left shoe, its heel hanging sideways off the sole. A card tag on a string round the left strap, in blue ink and a round hand: Fixed the heel. Dance like the floor owes you money. J. Serena reads it. She kisses the tag. She zips the bag. The bus slows.

EXT. PLAZA - DAY

Heat. A church, a pharmacy, a bar. Across the square, FERRETERÍA BUSTOS over a door, the shutter half down for Sunday. On the shop step, RAÚL BUSTOS, 61, broad, slow, a pencil behind his ear, a ring of keys on his belt, arms folded. The bus door opens. Serena steps down with a holdall and the shoe bag. Raúl walks to her. He takes the holdall. He looks at the shoe bag in her hand.

RAÚL

Not in this house.

He carries the holdall in. Serena stands in the empty plaza with the shoe bag against her chest.

End of episode one.
