INT. THE BUNGALOW ON WILLOW BEND - KITCHEN - DAY
A small kitchen open to a living room. Boxes on the floor. A keyboard in a padded case leans against a chair. A wall calendar by the hall door on November, the first circled in red and shift days marked S. On the fridge door, under a magnet, a photograph: DANNY PRATT, 30, in desert uniform, grinning and sunburnt, squints into the sun with one arm around a man in a fire station T shirt. LUCY PRATT, 27, in a school lanyard and a dust streaked shirt, sets down the last box. THEO VANCE, 31, the man from the photograph, keys in his fist, in the hall doorway.
THEO
About the rent.
LUCY
It's the first.
She holds out an envelope from her back pocket. He opens the flap and counts the notes with his thumb.
THEO
Eleven fifty.
LUCY
Eleven fifty.
THEO
I hadn't said a number.
LUCY
Danny told me.
THEO
Danny tells you everything.
LUCY
Danny tells me everything.
He pockets the envelope, takes a folded sheet from his front pocket and flattens it on the fridge beside the photograph: six lines in block capitals. He pins it with a red fire engine magnet marked STATION 31.
Lucy reads with a finger on each line.
LUCY
Rent on the first. Lights off. Knock. Left shelf is mine.
THEO
That one's me.
LUCY
Shifts are on the calendar. Six. We don't talk about the tarmac.
Her finger moves from the last line to the photograph.
LUCY
That's the tarmac.
THEO
The third of May. Six months ago.
LUCY
What happened on it?
THEO
Rule six.
LUCY
That's not an answer.
THEO
It's the rule.
He goes to the hall door and stops with his back to her.
THEO
Your brother made me swear something. Out on the tarmac. Before he got on the plane.
Lucy sets a stack of plates from the box on the counter.
LUCY
I know what you swore.
He turns. She lines the plates up, one, two, three, without looking at him.
THEO
He told you that.
LUCY
He tells me everything.
The front door shuts. The magnet holds the six rules to the fridge.
