INT. HOTEL LARIMER - SUITE 1204 - DAY
A hotel suite twelve floors up, grey December light through the window, snow on the sills. Two chairs face a sofa. On the sofa sits ZOE BENNETT, 27, in a coat too big for her, a phone in her hand. The screen shows a casting notice under the date, Wed 16 Dec: FEMALE, 27, BORN IN DENVER. TEN DAYS OVER CHRISTMAS. $24,000. Across from her, NADIA KARIMI, 30, in a black suit, holds printed pages and a clipboard. In the armchair by the window, JULIAN ALDRIDGE, 35, in a good coat he has not taken off, watches and says nothing.
NADIA
From the top of the page. You're talking to your mother-in-law.
ZOE
(reading)
"I know what you think of me. I know what this house costs. I'm happy."
NADIA
Again. Look at him when you say it.
Zoe looks at Julian. He does not look away.
ZOE
"I know what you think of me. I know what this house costs. I'm happy."
She puts the page down.
ZOE (CONT'D)
That's the whole speech.
NADIA
Where were you born?
ZOE
Denver. Saint Joseph's. My mother had the bill framed.
NADIA
Age?
ZOE
Twenty-seven. It's on the notice. Twenty-seven, Denver. Your client's particular.
NADIA
The client is particular.
ZOE
Ten days. A year's rent. And the role is "wife". Wife of what?
NADIA
The contract covers that.
ZOE
I'd like to hear it before I sign it.
Julian's hand moves on the arm of the chair. Nadia looks at him. He gives one nod.
NADIA
A house in Aspen, the seventeenth to the twenty-seventh. Christmas with a family. They meet you as his wife. You sleep in his room. You say nothing to anyone, before, during or after.
ZOE
Whose family?
Nadia does not answer. Zoe stands and picks up her bag.
ZOE (CONT'D)
I've done a furniture ad and a murder in a church basement. Nobody has ever hired me without a name on the call sheet.
She reaches the door. Julian speaks for the first time.
JULIAN
Miss Bennett.
She stops with her hand on the handle.
JULIAN (CONT'D)
The role is my wife.
End of episode one.
