INT. ASHBY HOUSE, FRONT HALL - DAY
Monday 2 March, nine in the morning. The front hall of a South of Broad mansion in Charleston. A curved staircase rises to a landing. Fresh magnolia on a side table. Morning light lies across a black and white marble floor.
NORA BELL, 31, a wedding planner in a pressed navy suit worn thin at the cuffs, steps in with a thick folder under her arm and shuts the door behind her.
CAROLINE ASHBY, 27, the bride, in a grey cardigan and flat shoes, her hair tied back and a pencil behind one ear, comes down the hall fast and holds out two folders. One is thick. One is thin, and tape seals its flap.
CAROLINE
You're Nora. Good. Take these before she sees.
NORA
Before who sees?
CAROLINE
The thick one is my mother's rules. Forty of them. Read every one.
NORA
And the thin one?
CAROLINE
Emergencies. Keep it closed.
NORA
What kind of emergencies?
CAROLINE
The kind where you'll know.
Nora takes both.
NORA
Mine has rules too. Rule one: the planner never works alone.
BIANCA ASHBY, 58, the mother of the bride, in cream silk and pearls with her hair set hard, stands in the dining room doorway with a coffee cup and does not come in.
BIANCA
Caroline. Is this the person?
CAROLINE
This is Nora Bell, Mother. The planner I chose.
BIANCA
The one from the newspaper.
NORA
That was three years ago, Mrs Ashby.
BIANCA
I have a long memory.
Bianca goes back into the dining room. Caroline rests her hand on the thin folder, then takes it away.
CAROLINE
The fee is what I said in Thursday's email. Ninety thousand. Half now.
NORA
Half now works.
Footsteps on the stairs.
GRANT ASHBY, 36, tall, in a charcoal suit with no tie and a watch he checks as he walks, stops on the bottom step and looks at Nora.
GRANT
Miss Bell.
NORA
Mr Ashby.
CAROLINE
You two know each other.
GRANT
I sued her. I won.
NORA
He did.
GRANT
Who let her in?
CAROLINE
I did. He's the best man, Nora.
Grant steps down onto the marble and holds out his hand for the folders.
End of episode one.
